Lyrica, pregabaline

Condition for which this medication is usually prescribed

Nerve pain

Short description of this condition

Nerve pain is a pain stimulus with no recognisable cause and does not serve any purpose. It can develop among other things as a result of an injury to or trapping of a nerve.

Effect of this medication

Lyrica binds to different parts of the central nervous system. The precise effect of pregabaline is not fully understood. However, it is know that pregabaline binds to the nerve endings in the brain. This explains the analgesic and anti-epileptic effect of pregabaline. A second possible effect that has been discovered as a result of research is comparable to the effect of sedatives. We also know that pregabaline has no effect on serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.

Advice on this condition

Because pregabaline works for less than 24 hours, you need to take it twice a day.

Common side effects

Vertigo/dizziness, insomnia.

Advice with regard to these side effects

Side effects are more likely the higher the dose of pregabaline. In consultation with your doctor, you can decide whether or not to decrease your dose.
